You Know What, This Is Quite Sweet
An Interview with Phoebe Balinska

21st January 2021

Because is Phoebe Balinska’s beautiful compilation of visuals and memories put together over the spring lockdown 2020. For us, it reminds us of the simple pleasures in life that bring the most joy. Balinska is a member of our OUR HAUS Creative Collective, so we asked her about her inspirations behind the video and her work.

Interview Lauren Hextall / In-HAUS Copywriter
Film Phoebe Balinska

Lauren Hextall What was the motivation for making this video?

Phoebe Balinska I made it during the first lockdown in France, so really it came about due to boredom! I had spent the past year or so travelling around Europe, and I decided to put some footage together as a memoir. A few months later, I came across it and I thought, you know what, this is quite sweet. So, I put it up on YouTube so I could share it with my friends.

LH The cover is beautiful, is it you singing?

PB Yes, it’s me, it was a voice memo I made a while ago after rewatching Across the Universe, one of my favourite films! I wanted to use an original audio. At first, I was apprehensive as to whether or not it was good, but I’ve come to realise as a creative it’s actually best not to decide that for yourself when it comes to your work/projects. You end up producing and sharing a lot more once you stop caring what people will think!

LH What feelings does the compilation evoke for you?

PB Tranquility and gratitude. The video is simply a memoir of my life, of the places and people that have moved me throughout the last 2 years. I included clips from the last summer I spent in my hometown in New Zealand and my travels in Europe. There is no order or narrative, for me it is just a reminder of the beauty of life.

LH For us, it reminds us of the simple pleasures that bring the most joy, what are some of your simple pleasures?

PB That is very sweet! I have great appreciation for the simple pleasures of life: A strong cup of coffee in the morning, watching birds sore across the fuchsia backdrop of a setting sun, a profound yet brief conversation with a stranger who you’ll probably never see again... to name a few.

LH Lastly, do you have a favourite shot in there?

PH Yes! Definitely the shot of the single swan sitting on the water during a very pink midsummer sunset at Lake Balaton, Hungary.
